Clippers start BCHL preseason with back to back wins

NANAIMO – The Clippers won their first two BCHL exhibition games against Victoria.

Nanaimo won 2-1 and 4-3 in road games at the Q Centre on Sept. 25 and 26.

Head Coach Darren Naylor was pleased with how his team performed in their first tests of the new season.

“I liked the way we worked and the way we went about our business. I thought we played five really decent periods and then the third period of the second game we lost our composure a bit. But until we get acclimatized we might have some nights like that.”

On Friday, Nanaimo got down 1-0 after the first period but new Clipper recruits Alec Scouras and Max Dukovac scored in the last half of the game to ensure the victory. Goaltender Ethan Neitsch stopped 33 shots in the win.

The Clippers built up a 4-1 lead and then had to hang on in their Sept. 26 game. Brayden Boehm, Nick DeSantis, Tim Washe and Sean Donaldson tallied for Nanaimo while veteran Jordan Naylor backstopped the team with 40 saves.

A change may still be coming to the schedule but Nanaimo will play games Oct. 2 and 9 at Cliff McNabb Arena and Oct. 3 and 10 on the road.

The games in October and November will be played as an Island Cup tournament.

As long as COVID-19 restrictions allow the exhibition games will have their own standings and culminate in a mini tournament in late November in Victoria.
