1 new death, 2 new COVID cases in Island Health

NANAIMO — The number of people on Vancouver Island who’ve lost their lives to COVID-19 has increased for the first time in months.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced one additional fatality on Monday, Sept. 28. Six people have died within Island Health since the start of the pandemic.

Dr. Henry said the man was in his 50’s or 60’s with underlying health conditions who died at home.

The last fatality within Island Health was recorded on May 6.

Two additional cases were recorded within Island Health since Friday, for a total of 206.

Dr. Henry confirmed a total of 267 new cases over the weekend.

The number of active cases has held firm around 1,300, from a high of roughly 1,900 one week prior.

“It isn’t always easy to say no to friends and family,” Dr. Henry said when discussing how easily COVID-19 spreads through large events. “If you see family or friends putting themselves at risk, we need all of us to encourage and support people to do the right thing right now.”

There’s been 21 new confirmed cases within Island Health since students returned to school.

Island Health lists no exposure events at schools within the health region.
