Vancouver Island suffers additional COVID-19 fatality, no new cases announced

NANAIMO — The number of fatalities on Vancouver Island due to the COVID-19 pandemic has increased.

The ministry of health announced one new fatality in the Island Health region, bringing the total number of deaths to five.

Two others deaths in the Vancouver Coastal Health region were also announced.

“We offer our condolences to everyone who has lost their loved ones,” a ministry release said.

There are now 2,255 active or recovered cases of COVID-19 across B.C. with 23 new cases on Wednesday, May 6.

None of the new cases are on Vancouver Island, leaving 124 active or resolved cases on the Island.

More than 100 people have recovered from the respiratory virus.

As the curve continues to flatten in B.C., premier John Horgan will announce his plans to re-open the province in a 3 p.m. press conference on Wednesday.
