NANAIMO — Travel along one of Nanaimo’s busiest and crash-prone areas is set to become a little slower.

Beginning Monday Mar. 16, the Ministry of Transportation will reduce a section of Hwy. 19A from Enterprise Way to the junction with Hwy. 19 to 70 kilometres per hour, down from the current limit of 80 kilometres per hour.

The section of road features a high volume of traffic and business entrances including Woodgrove Centre and Costco.

The intersection with Aulds Rd/Hammond Bay Rd. has routinely been included among some of the dangerous crash sites on Vancouver Island.

A release from the Ministry of Transportation said the speed reduction was made in consultation with the City of Nanaimo, RCMP and ICBC.

“Reducing the highway speed limit will help lower the chance of collisions for people entering and leaving the highway along this commercial corridor,” the release said.

A red light camera at the Aulds Rd. intersection will remain active, however the recently-added speed enforcement functions will be deactivated for five months to allow drivers to adjust to the new speed limit.
