Clippers weekly wrap Jan. 29-31

NANAIMO – The Clippers are coming off perhaps their most dramatic week of the season.

Both of their games were thrilling last minute victories.

Josh Bourne scored with 22 seconds left against West Kelowna to give Nanaimo a 3-2 win on Jan. 29. He did it again two days later with 11 seconds remaining in the Clippers 4-3 victory versus Alberni Valley on Jan. 31.

Bourne had five points in two games to lead he Clippers attack and earned an honourable mention for the league’s player of the week award.

Mackenzie Merriman also scored in both games during the week, while goalie Jordan Naylor earned back to back wins..

Who was missing from the lineup was almost as much of a story as who was playing for the Clippers.

Nanaimo was without eight regulars due to suspension and injury in the Jan. 29 game and six players for the Jan. 31 contest.

The Clippers found themselves in second place in the Island Division come the end of the weekend, seven points behind Cowichan Valley for first and eight points ahead of the third place Powell River Kings.

Nanaimo will now embark on their final extended road trip of the year, visiting Vernon, Chilliwack and Surrey.

CLIP NOTES:

Nanaimo’s back to back wins were their first consecutive victories since Dec. 15 and 20.

There were 2393 fans in attendance for the Alberni Valley game including nearly 90 alumni.

Forward Scott Mahovlich was assessed a five game suspension for a match penalty in the first period of the Jan. 31 game against the Bulldogs.

The Clippers have announced their team awards banquet will be on Mon. Feb. 24 at the Coast Bastion Inn.
