Community rallies to replace tents stolen from Nanaimo school

NANAIMO — A field trip for Grade 7 students was saved by the generosity of parents and the Nanaimo community.

Nine tents were stolen from the Departure Bay Elementary Eco-School over the weekend between Friday, June 21 and Sunday, June 23. They were going to be used for a year-end Grade 7 field trip only a day after the tents were stolen.

Not wanting to have their children’s field trip be ruined, parents quickly spread the word about the theft.

“Sure enough, within hours several community-minded businesses, staff and parents saved the day,” Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release.
