Nanaimo RCMP hunting for person of interest in convenience store robbery

May 29, 2019 | 7:45 AM

NANAIMO — A popular mid-Nanaimo convenience store is without a cash register after a break-in.

Police responded to a broken glass alarm at the Ice Nail Bar, formerly known as the Macs Convenience on the corner of Departure Bay Rd. and Norwell Dr., shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

“By the time we got there the bad guy had taken off,” RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said. “Fortunately, someone saw an individual trying to smash open a cash register nearby.”

The remains of a cash register stolen from the convenience store was found on Barons Rd. roughly one block over.

Witness statements directed police to a man who is now a person of interest in the robbery. Surveillance footage shows the man inside the store several hours earlier.

He’s white, standing approximately five foot nine with a medium build.

Anyone with information is urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
