Nanaimo Crime Stoppers using first of its kind advertising

Jul 16, 2018 | 4:49 PM

NANAIMO — Railway crossings all across Nanaimo are now pulling double duty: warning drivers and promoting the local Crime Stoppers chapter.

Over 40 railway boxes across Nanaimo now have stickers on them advertising Crime Stoppers and hopefully deterring graffiti artists from tagging the boxes.

“Now that we’ve got them up, there doesn’t appear to be any graffiti on the railway boxes, which is encouraging,” Crime Stoppers member Brian Cornborough told NanaimoNewsNOW.

The stickers were methodically distributed across the city at a time when graffiti on railway equipment was rising dramatically.

To the best of their knowledge, the Nanaimo Crime Stoppers is the first chapter to use stickers in this fashion.

Cornborough said it’s a great collaboration which decreases graffiti and promoted Crime Stoppers.

“Every time we have an event the success is overwhelming, but it makes you realize there’s many folks out there who don’t know what we do,” he said. “I think there’s still a lot of education done by us and the more we’re out there, the better off everyone will be.”

Crime Stoppers receives anonymous tips submitted from the community about any type of criminal activity. Rewards are given for tips which lead to an arrest.
