QUALICUM BEACH — A man is dead after being shot by police on the Inland Island Highway north of Qualicum Beach.

Mounties say they were called by paramedics to Hwy. 19 near the Corcan Rd. overpass Thursday morning just after 6 a.m. in response to a man who stabbed himself inside a vehicle.

911 calls reported a man running down the highway and someone trying to restrain him.

RCMP report a struggle then ensued between police and the man and “shot(s) were fired by police.” Paramedics treated the 35-year-old on scene but he was later pronounced dead.

RCMP note two officers sustained minor injuries during the struggle and were taken to hospital.

The Independent Investigations Office was notified and are now investigating. The IIO investigates police officer involved incidents involving serious injury or death. The watchdog then forwards reports to the Crown for their discretion.
