Long-time NEDC and city employee Manhas named acting CEO

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation (NEDC) is turning to a familiar face at a tumultuous time.

The corporation has announced that Amrit Manhas will serve as acting chief executive officer. Previous CEO John Hankins was fired on Tuesday, one day after publishing an op-ed piece critical of the city for removing tourism from NEDC’s mandate.

Manhas has been the economic development officer for the corporation since its inception in 2011. Before that she worked for the city of Nanaimo in economic development and finance for 18 years.

The last 10 days have seen NEDC thrust into the spotlight in Nanaimo. Along with the removal of tourism services and the firing of Hankins, board vice chair Doug Kalcsics confirms three board members quit on Monday. A fourth resigned from the board a few weeks ago.
