“That means the workers not only have been paid a fair wage for their work, but they have access to a safe workplace, they can expect training, there is gender equity and no child labour. There is also accountability within the workplace and the workers are expected to promote the concepts of fair trade and to encourage the practices.”

She said operating this way allows the producers to pay for their basic needs like schooling, while being treated fairly in the international business world.

Items for sale include real-wool toques, blankets and bags made of repurposed materials and hemp, as well as natural soaps, organic spices, and more.

Global Village Nanaimo operates two pop-up stores offered annually in different locations throughout Nanaimo, one in the spring and another in fall and winter.
