Outgoing Mayor and Councillors saluted

Yesterday was the final Port Alberni City Council meeting for the Mayor and three of her Councillors.

After 12 years on City Council, 9 as Mayor, Sharie Minions says her councils have built a legacy in Port Alberni with project like the Quay-to-Quay pathway, and she’ll continue to monitor the Somass Lands project with interest.

“It is something that I care deeply about,” she said. “It was the reason I chose to run for Mayor in the first place, and I know that there has already been an expressed commitment to continue moving that forward and I can’t wait to see what comes of that property. I think it’s a really transformative piece for our community moving forward.”

Council members, city staff and members of the public thanked Minions for her leadership, along with councillors Dustin Dame, Todd Patola and Tom Verbrugge.

Long-time city councillor Cindy Solda saluted Minions for rising above the online vitriol that sometimes turned threatening.

“I also want to acknowledge the unacceptable treatment Sharie has had during her time as Mayor,” she said. “Social media has made it so much worse. People sit behind their keyboards and say almost anything they want, yet many of those same people have never come to City Hall, picked up a phone or had a face-to-face conversation. And when safety becomes a concern to the point where changes are needed in City Hall, we should all be asking what has happened to the way we treat the people in public service.”

While still Mayor for another 2 weeks, Minions says she will take some time to figure out her next path, but it won’t involve politics.
