NANAIMO — The BC Conservation Officer Service has launched an investigation after the remains of a deer were found, with evidence suggesting it was shot in a residential area.

Investigators are looking into the illegal shooting and killing of a deer, believed to be with a rifle, in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 23, between approximately 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. around Wildlife Place and Bird Sanctuary Drive, near Buttertubs Marsh.

“The use of a firearm in a residential area presents a significant public safety concern,” a notice from Conservation Officers stated.

Investigators say they want to speak with anyone who may have witnessed or otherwise have information regarding the incident.

Also, they’re hoping to connect with anyone who may have seen any suspicious movements in the area around the time in question.

Those with information are asked to contact the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277, or report through the online Report All Poaches and Polluters form.

Use of a rifle in a residential area violates several local, provincial and federal laws, and could result in criminal charges against the person responsible.
