“The current cameras are at the end of their working life,” an Attorney General ministry statement read. “ICBC selected Jenoptik Canada through a competitive procurement to supply and install the new cameras and to maintain them for as long as 10 years. The new cameras will have higher resolution and similar enforcement and data capabilities as the previous cameras.”

License plate information is recorded by the cameras, leading to mailed fines to motorists.

Net ticket revenue is returned to B.C. municipalities to support policing and public-safety programs, the release stated.

Speed thresholds leading to fines aren’t revealed by the B.C. government.

Nanaimo’s two monitored safety cameras nabbed 974 motorists last year, with a record 314 speeding fines resulting from the north Nanaimo intersection last year.

A record 1,139 Nanaimo-based fines from the cameras were issued in 2023.

The cameras began populating high-crash intersections in the province starting in 2019.
