NANAIMO — Local Mounties teamed up with area partners, including a helicopter, to continue cracking down on high-risk drivers, resulting in over 100 Motor Vehicle Act charges.

During the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 4, Nanaimo RCMP, together with officers from Oceanside, Comox Valley, BC Highway Patrol, and the RCMP Air 8 helicopter, conducted targeted enforcement across the Harbour City.

Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said ten vehicles were pulled off the road, with 65 of those resulting in speeding-related charges.

“We were just nailing the vehicles that were driving erratically. They’re stunting. We had e-bikes involved, and as a result, there was over 100 charges laid under the Motor Vehicle Act, some criminal code. There’s ten impoundments, which is quite significant, and six for excessive speed. So you’re talking going 40 kilometres an hour over the speed limit…and there’s one person driving while prohibited.”

One incident involved a motorcycle rider who was seen speeding, weaving through traffic, and passing vehicles unlawfully on both shoulders of roads in Nanaimo.

“With the cooperation and the coordination from Air 8, our members were able to locate that person and arrest them in the backyard of a residence in Nanaimo, and that person now is looking at charges of dangerous operation and driving while prohibited, and of course, the motorcycle is impounded.”

O’Brien said social media usually “lights up” when they see a police helicopter in the sky, and encouraged people to continue reporting dangerous drivers, as well as areas where residents feel increased traffic enforcement is needed by using their non-emergency phone number: 1-250-754-2345.

The RCMP Air 8 was also used during a similar traffic blitz in Nanaimo in August, which also led to a number of charges being laid against dangerous drivers.
