PARKSVILLE — Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 19 in Parksville just north of the No. 46 exit off-ramp.

It happened on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 7:10 a.m., involving a white Kia Forte, which police said went off-road to the right and landed overturned in a forested area.

An Oceanside RCMP news release stated the male driver and female passenger were both hospitalized, with the driver sustaining more serious injuries of the two.

“Witnesses reported the Kia being driven in an erratic manner prior to the crash and evidence obtained by investigators suggest alcohol impairment by the driver is a contributing factor in this crash.” Sgt. Worth stated in the release.

Worth said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Both occupants of the car are 27 years old and residents of Vancouver Island, Sgt. Worth confirmed with NanaimoNewsNOW.

Highway 19 was closed for several hours while the scene was investigated by an RCMP collision reconstructionist.

“The impact to traffic northbound was significant that day on a Sunday morning on a long holiday weekend. Traffic was severely impacted by the closure while we investigated and processed the scene.”

The investigation is ongoing, with no charges laid at this point, Sgt. Worth noted.

Anybody who witnessed the crash who hasn’t spoken to police, or was dashcam footage, is asked to contact Oceanside RCMP at 1-250-248-6111, quoting file number 2026-9535.
