“Our members are going to be out in full force, looking at all the crosswalks and stopping violators, and we’re also looking for kids on e-scooters who are not driving them appropriately. Those are only on public roads and designated bike lanes.”

E-scooter riders must be at least 16 years old, while e-bike riders must be no younger than 14.

School District 68 is more directly enforcing the rules this year, banning e-scooters and e-bikes at elementary schools and requiring parents or caregivers to come retrieve them if students bring them in the morning.

O’Brien said pickup and drop-off is a key time for pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, parents and caregivers can ensure those conflicts are kept to a minimum.

“Ensure that when the children are dropped off in a designated area, they go from the door that’s closest to the side of the road, because if they go into the driving area, there’s a potential of being struck by a car.”

While school zones are in effect on each school day, police are reminding drivers 30 kilometre per hour playground zones remain in effect year-round from dawn until dusk.
