Nanaimo judge fines fishing guide for sloppy record-keeping
NANAIMO — A routine inspection last summer netted a guide a costly fine.
Ruzheng Ma, 71, was sentenced last month at provincial court in Nanaimo after he pleaded guilty to a pair of fisheries act violations in connection to a guided fishing trip in local waters on the afternoon of July 3 2025.
A pair of local Fisheries and Oceans Canada enforcement officers patrolling the Nanaimo/Gabriola Island area came across a 40-foot fishing charter yacht with 17 people on board.
Prosecutor Emma Rheaume told the hearing that only 13 licenses were on board, while a bucket contained one lingcod and 20 rockfish.
