Nanaimo Hornets rugby fostering next generation with active kids programs

All age groups will run for ten sessions, ending on Nov. 4.

Britten said every night is followed by a meal in the clubhouse.

“It’s a way to socialize and all the age groups and parents can hang out together. It shows people what the club rugby culture and environment is like.”

In the previous spring minis season they had about 60 kids involved.

The Hornets are close to that number now with room for more players to join.

There are usually 5-6 players on the field at a time for the younger age groups with boys and girls playing together until U12.

Britten said the Hornets will once again have strong representation for their men’s and women’s team and they are pleased with the number of younger kids taking up the sport.

A gap has materialized for older youth with a hope a junior program can start to take shape.

“We’re really trying to get those kids who have played minis and aged out and not had a home to play rugby, a way to stay involved through elementary and high school. We don’t want anyone to age out and not have a place to play rugby in Nanaimo. There have been preseason sessions with the junior girls and if we can run a junior program this fall we would love to do so. We’re looking at the possibility of combining with a junior team in Port Alberni to play some exhibition games if we have the numbers.”

The flagship Hornets men’s and women’s Division 1 teams are currently in their preseason training and those teams will be playing league games in mid September for the men and late September for the women.
