Missing hiker called 911, two days after going missing in B.C. mountains

Nicholson, who heard a recording of the call, said it was a garbled message and difficult to understand, but was made from Volo’s cell phone. She said rescuers were searching the steep Mount Habrich Loop area on foot.

Nicholson said Wednesday’s weather was poor with heavy rain, but conditions improved Thursday, giving them better visibility.

She said search teams have been supported by helicopters and drones with thermal imaging capabilities.

“We have had ground teams, we’ve had air teams and drone teams scouring the area, and we know his route,” said Nicholson.

Mounties said officers were collaborating with searchers, and were appealing for anyone who had seen Volo to contact them.

RCMP said Volo was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, white socks, black runners, and a Sea-To-Sky Gondola pass on a lanyard.

Volo’s sister Ola has pleaded on social media for help from other hikers who might have crossed paths with him.

“It’s hard to even write these words. Stas is my brother and someone I love beyond words. We are desperately trying to find him and bring him home,” she said in a post.

But Squamish Search and Rescue also put out a statement on social media, warning the public not to enter the Habrich area on their own after noticing messages about the search were being widely shared.

“We understand and deeply appreciate the desire to help bring Stas home. However, please do not independently enter the Habrich search area,” reads the post.

It said public members entering the area can create additional safety risks.
