It’s expected all their food operations will be operated out of the new 24,000-square-foot facility by the second week of September, seeing them fully moving out of the current Fry St. building.

By late October or early November, Sinclair hopes they will be in a position to open up another free food market at the new building to provide better access to food for those who need it.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s here. We started this process over six years ago, and it started out with just a piece of dirt, and to see a massive warehouse now where that dirt was, it’s pretty exciting to see. As a team, we’re very excited to move in, and we’re excited for how it’s going to enable us to expand and improve our service across coastal B.C.”

In addition to being their primary distribution centre, the new warehouse also includes office space and will act as the organizational headquarters.

Well over 15,000 people across Vancouver Island alone access food and services provided by Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank each month.

“This new facility has more than quadrupled our capacity to receive and distribute food,” Sinclair said. “What that means is communities across coastal B.C. will have more food for them, so while this is a facility that’s in Nanaimo, it really is to serve all of Vancouver Island and coastal B.C.”

The City of Nanaimo bought the East Wellington Rd. lot late in 2021 to allow Loaves and Fishes to advance the project.

It’s located immediately next to a Canada Post office and sorting facility.

The provincial government made a $7 million contribution to the project in 2023, while federal funding of $5 million was confirmed earlier this year.
