‘You can watch the smoke:’ cameras overlooking Nanaimo on constant wildfire watch
NANAIMO — New technology atop Mount Benson is keeping a 24/7 watch out for wildfires.
Mosaic Forest Management has installed two 360-degree cameras on top of Mount Benson, which use artificial intelligence to detect wildfire smoke around the clock, sending notifications to staff who can then alert the Coastal Fire Centre, if needed.
Steve Mjaaland, director of forest protection, said the camera can view around 50 kilometres in any one direction as it scans, with the supporting software able to differentiate between smoke, fog, or cloud cover.
“When the cameras pick up a fire, they send you a notification with a link on it in your email or in a text. You open up the link, and it automatically takes you to where the fire is so you can see it yourself. You can also log into the software, and you can watch the smoke live, and you can zoom in on it and build up your confidence that it is a fire—it’s not a dust cloud, it’s not a cloud, it’s not steam.”
