Stolen passport turns into thousands of dollars in debt for Oceanside resident
PARKSVILLE — An Oceanside resident found out the hard way someone had borrowed thousands of dollars in their name.
Last month, the victim was applying for a new credit card when they learned they had an outstanding debt with a moneylender, which was news to them.
Sgt. Shane Worth with the Oceanside RCMP said the victim told police they believe it was related to their passport being stolen from their vehicle in the Lower Mainland three years ago.
“What we think happened here is someone got a hold of their passport and ended up either opening an account with the moneylender or through some other means, and was able to get a loan for approximately $13,000.”
