‘Integral to community well-being:’ restored south Nanaimo recreation centre re-opened
NANAIMO — A vital community gathering place south of the city is officially open to the public once again, now being run by those who live nearby.
The South Wellington Community Centre, at 2195 South Wellington Rd., officially reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 19, signalling the end of a multi-year journey to save the former school and breathe new life into a valuable community amenity.
Through partnerships with School District 68 and the Regional District of Nanaimo, the building is now being run by the South Wellington and Area Community Association (SWACA), with chair Rebeca Easthom telling NanaimoNewsNOW they’re finding their way.
“We’re still in the very early days, still setting a lot of things up. We are 99.9 per cent volunteer-run, so we are really looking for more volunteers right now to get involved and help out with the day-to-day operations, looking for people to run programming out of our building and support our community to further connect with one another.”
