‘I just knew I was getting to the other side:’ local swimmer completes Strait of Georgia crossing
NANAIMO — A local woman’s months of planning and training have paid off, swimming the Strait of Georgia in record time.
Melanie Buggey arrived at Schooner Cove in Nanoose Bay at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 18, some eight hours and 42 minutes after stepping into the water at Reception Point, near Sechelt, on the Sunshine Coast.
Buggey said her confidence skyrocketed in the opening minutes of the swim.
“I think the second my feet touched the water, I was like, ‘Oh, this will be fine,’ because the water was way, way warmer than I expected, and my biggest concern was hypothermia. I think because I ended up swimming six weeks later than I had planned, hypothermia just didn’t end up being a concern…I just knew I was getting to the other side.”
