‘A complete overhaul:’ fundraising underway for key Nanaimo CDC renovation

NANAIMO — Pending renovations to an extremely well-used community play space require some financial help.

The Nanaimo Child Development Centre (CDC) is launching a new fundraising campaign to collect $25,000 in donations for a total revamp of their outdoor play space, used by over 150 families every week as part of the organization’s programming.

Stephanie Schweigert, play group facilitator at the CDC, told NanaimoNewsNOW the last renovations to the space, which backs onto the public health unit building, were done in 2006.

“It is a complete overhaul because what we have currently is slowly deteriorating. We have cement that’s going up and breaking, and we have tree roots coming up, and plants deciding to sprout in new spots, and we have lots of wear and tear from fun and usage over time.”

The new space will include rubberized flooring, similar to what was installed at Maffeo Sutton Park’s playground, grassy areas, and different zones for a variety of activities.

Schweigert said most Tuesdays, they’ll have nearly 50 kids attending, which pushes their current 85-person cap in the play space.

Even quieter days see 60 kids and caregivers attending.

“Nanaimo doesn’t really have tons of spaces where kids are safe to play, and there are not easy ways to run off, so for those little ones that need that confined space but lots of room to move, it’s going to be wonderful.”

Kid-led ownership of the space is a critical element for the CDC, ensuring Nanaimo’s littlest residents learn how to make their own decisions and establish their own relationships.

“Maybe they want to see Play-Doh, or they want to go on the slide. The parents follow the child, and in a child’s world, I think adults often dictate where they go in their life, and so it’s the one space where kids get to play and fall and experiment and see exactly what they like. They’re going to learn how to interact with other kids, they’re going to make connections…it’s a space where they are in charge.”

Dismantling of the current space is expected to take place beginning in early September, with the play groups moving indoors for the fall and winter.

Construction and landscaping, as well as installation of new equipment, is expected to continue through to next spring.

The CDC has partnered with the Big Kahuna Golf Classic, an annual tournament at Pryde Vista Golf Course, along with a subsequent dinner at the Nanaimo Curling Club.

Any funds donated between Aug. 17 and Oct. 1, up to $25,000, will be matched by tournament organizers.

Donations can be made online through the Nanaimo CDC’s website.
