Support boats need to be at least 18 feet long, while operators must be fully licensed, and it’s considered helpful if they’re already familiar with local waters.

“The escort boats start outside Protection Island, then the boats follow the tubs along the entire course up to the corner of Gabriola Island, around Entrance Island, all the way up to the Winchelsea Islands.”

On board, the boats carry one or two members from the bathtub crew who can help the tubber if necessary.

Peacock said the relationship between tubbers, the crew, and support vessels is key and often goes well beyond the race itself.

“What you end up with is a family of friends, and most of them last for a lifetime. You work so closely together, getting ready for the day and for the race itself, you’re creating a lifetime of memories. Anybody that I know that’s ever entered the race and/or been on an escort boat remembers it for the rest of their life.”

Sunday’s race begins at 11 a.m., with prime viewing available at Maffeo Sutton Park.

Oceanfront areas of Lantzville, Piper’s Lagoon and Neck Point Park also offer good vantage points for the race as tubs go by.
