NNN Last 10: Transportation expansions changing the way Nanaimo moves
NanaimoNewsNOW is celebrating 10 years of serving Nanaimo and the mid-Island, by looking at the ways our region has changed in the last decade.
NANAIMO — The last decade has seen a noticeable shift in the way mid-Islanders get to where they need to go, as transportation needs and wants continue evolving.
In September 2021, a deal was announced between the Nanaimo Port Authority and Snuneymuxw First Nation for a new high-speed, passenger-only ferry service linking the downtowns of Nanaimo and Vancouver, with the last, short-lived option shutting down in 2006.
The names of the first two ships, built in Vietnam, were announced in April 2023, with more details revealed over the weeks and months to follow, arriving in Nanaimo in the summer.
