Canada Day events held in Nanaimo & mid Island region

NANAIMO — A whole lot of red and white apparel will be on display as Canada Day events are staged across the mid-Island on Wednesday, July 1.

Nanaimo’s Maffeo Sutton Park will host events courtesy of the City of Nanaimo from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., with family-friendly activities including live entertainment, cultural performances, food trucks, face painting, a bouncy castle, a photo booth and more.

Attendees are encouraged to find alternative transportation as there will be no general parking available at the park on Canada Day, except for limited accessible parking.

Free curbside parking will be available, as well as City-owned lots.

A bike valet service with free bike storage on-site at the waterfront park.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is providing a free BC Transit shuttle service to the park from Woodgrove Mall and South Parkway Plaza, with all bus routes converting to their Sunday schedule for July 1.

The Nanaimo NightOwls will be providing a permitted fireworks display following their 6:35 p.m. West Coast League game at Serauxmen Stadium against the Victoria Harbourcats, with the fireworks happening immediately after the game.

Oceanside Events

For Canada Day in Oceanside, Parksville is the place to be.

Events kick off with the Shriners’ breakfast at 7:30 to 11 a.m. along Craig St., with the 10 a.m. parade along the Island Hwy. E., starting at Shelly Rd. and ending on Craig St.

Family-friendly events are happening throughout the day all over Parksville’s Community Park, including live bands, face painters, and Canada Day cupcakes and cake.

An extensive roster of food trucks will be available at Community Park, which sees thousands of people for Canada Day festivities.

Ladysmith:

In Ladysmith, Canada Day events will once again take place at Transfer Beach Park from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Ladysmith Kinsmen Club, with the official ceremony taking place at 11:30 a.m. at the Amphitheatre, and the cake cutting happening at 11:45 a.m., with free slices available while supplies last.

Across B.C.

Royal Canadian Air Force flybys will entertain onlookers at events across the country to celebrate Canada’s 159th birthday.

A CC-295 Kingfisher fixed-wing search-and-rescue aircraft flying over the Comox Valley at some point throughout the day.

The B.C. government reminds residents to be safe while travelling and celebrating this Canada Day, and to keep the dry conditions in mind.

A majority of open fires, including fireworks, sky lanterns, and burn barrels, are currently prohibited in the Coastal Fire Centre, with only small, category 1 fires permitted, which are no larger than 0.5 metres high and wide.
