One killed in fatal south Nanaimo highway crash

NANAIMO — One person has died, and two others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a high-speed crash.

Emergency crews were called to the Cedar Rd. and Trans Canada Hwy. intersection just after 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, after a dark-coloured Kia SUV collided with a white Acura sedan.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said the driver and sole occupant of the Acura, a young female, was pronounced dead on scene, while a driver and passenger in the SUV were taken to hospital.

“It’s a fairly fulsome investigation at this point, a lot of people involved and a lot of people coming forward,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “But for us to do a full, thorough investigation, we’re looking for any additional evidence that can assist us moving forward.

Police are not releasing any information regarding the age or hometown of the deceased.

Police also not commenting publicly on how the vehicles collided in the intersection.

Cst. O’Brien said the two occupants of the SUV were released from hospital Sunday evening.

Members from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) attended the scene, with the intersection closed for several hours.

An investigation into the incident continues, with police not ruling out any contributing factors such as impairment or speed.

Anyone with dash cam footage of the incident, who hasn’t already spoken with police, are asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP detachment at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2026-19671.
