NANAIMO — A $17 million project is poised to improve driving conditions on a number of Island highways and rural side roads, including a large number in Nanaimo.

A section of Hwy. 19, between the Trans Canada Hwy. and Duke Point ferry terminal, is included in the work poised to be completed over the summer months, as are roughly 33 kilometres of side roads in the rural areas of Nanaimo.

Twelve roads across three work areas will see some amount of resurfacing, including major arteries in Extension, Cassidy, and Wellington areas of the central Island.

Included in Extension are Nanaimo River Rd., White Rapids Rd., Extension Rd., South Forks Rd. and Nanaimo Lakes Rd.

Cassidy area residents will see improvements to Timberland Rd., Hallberg Rd., Graham Rd. and Cameron Rd., while those in Wellington will see crews around Jameson Rd., Kilpatrick Rd. and Webster Rd.

“Drivers can expect temporary traffic changes, reduced speeds, and minor delays in active construction zones,” a statement from the province noted.

The projects around Nanaimo are part of a larger $102.5 million project to improve driving surfaces across selected parts of the Island and Lower Mainland.

Hwy. 1 will see upgrades in Abbotsford, the North Shore, and near Hope.

Additional projects on Vancouver Island include Hwy. 1 in Chemainus, along with Hwy. 19 between Craig’s Crossing and Buckley Bay, and Hwy. 19A in Campbell River.

Full details on each project as they are scheduled and implemented will be available through DriveBC.
