Speed tickets surge at high-crash north Nanaimo intersection

While speeding is an issue at the north Nanaimo junction, the presence of red-light violators is dropping at the intersection.

Just 44 red light tickets at the Island Hwy./Hammond Bay/Aulds intersection were recorded in 2025, demonstrating continued improvement from the 76 issued in 2024 and 150 in 2023.

However, red light violations remains an issue at Nanaimo’s other provincially monitored intersection on the Island Hwy./Norwell Dr./Bowen Rd., which only tracks red light runners.

The second highest number of red-light tickets were issued last year, with 616 violators reported by the B.C. government.

Overall, 974 total violators at the two Nanaimo intersections were recorded, representing the second most, behind the 1,139 tabulated in 2023, and ahead of the 857 tickets issued in 2024.

According to the B.C. government, there were 128,288 total intersection violators in the province last year, up by 2,288 compared to 2024.

Advance warning signs, as well as many on-board navigating systems, warn motorists of provincially monitored intersections.

Implemented in 2021, RoadSafetyBC, under the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, operates Intersection Safety Cameras (ISC) at 140 high-risk intersections across the province 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

There are 105 automated cameras overseeing red-light violators at intersections, while red-light and speeders are tracked at 35 intersections.

The ministry states red light violation represents entering an intersection after a light turns right, while it won’t disclose what precisely triggers a speeding fine.
