‘It’s a lot of fun:’ Curious ComicCon promoting literacy with free event

Apr 30, 2026 | 1:46 PM

NANAIMO — It’s time to dust off your stormtrooper helmet and polish your Bat boots, as the 2026 edition of Curious ComicCon is on this weekend in Nanaimo.

Celebrating their ninth year hosting vendors, artists, cosplay enthusiasts and fans, Country Club Centre will once again be packed on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., for the free, family-friendly event.

Curious Comics manager Rob McKee told NanaimoNewsNOW, just like in previous years, it once again falls on Free Comic Book Day.

“We’re going to have hundreds of free comics that we’re going to give out to everybody. We’re going to be doing the big cosplay contest again, which is really well received and people seem to really, really love it.”

While attending the event is free of charge, donations collected from the silent auction will go to Literacy Central Vancouver Island, who provides free literacy tutoring and accessible workshops.

McKee said they felt it was the perfect fit for this year’s event.

“Free Comic Book Day was originally intended to promote literacy, and I think those two go together so well, and it seemed like a no-brainer this year.”

Since its inception, Curious ComicCon has raised around $52,000 for local charities, including $7,000 last year to support the Nanaimo Youth Services Association.

All the popular events from past years, like the cosplay contest and artist meet and greets, will be available, as well as a few new things this year, like an artist sketch-off with their finished work being auctioned off to charity, and a trinket trade-off, where attendees can swap and trade the free trinkets provided.

McKee said while it’s hard to get an exact headcount of attendees, he figured between four and five thousand people attended last year as it continues to grow in popularity.

He said he and his board of directors put a lot of time and hard work into making this happen, and its all worth it when the big day finally comes.

“It’s an incredible thing, especially on the day to see all the people show up, all the kids with big smiles on their faces and everyone dressed up, it’s a great time, it’s awesome, it’s a lot of fun.”
