‘These are very small non-conformances:’ RDN responds to Duke Point sewage advisory notice
NANAIMO — Local wastewater officials contend a recent B.C. government advisory notice is merely a snapshot of an otherwise high performing sewage treatment service.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy last month issued the Regional District of Nanaimo a non-compliance letter in reference to three separate incidents at its Duke Point Pollution Control Centre on Jackson Rd.
Notably, a July 17, 2025, fecal reading (fecal coliform) was more than 16 times higher than the allowable provincially mandated limit captured in three years of monitoring data through this past past January.
During an extended phone interview, Belinda Woods, the RDN’s manager of Wastewater Services, clarified that the advisory notice fell under the ministry’s second lowest non-compliance rating category.
