‘Get their hands dirty:’ PreVIU Days gives future students a university sneak peek

NANAIMO — Vancouver Island University is offering prospective students of all ages a chance to get hands-on experience with several of their programs, absolutely free of charge.

PreVIU Days runs from Monday, March 9 through March 22 and is a new initiative providing higher learners a chance to watch a lecture, meet the faculty, and get a tour of the campus and facilities.

Manager of student recruitment Rob Barcelos said it’s more than simply getting a chance to see the university grounds.

“Connection is super important at VIU, and we see that within our faculty to student conversations and the way those interactions happen, and so we know that when those interactions and connections are built strongly, that it tends to lead to a better experience for the students.”

Along with their programs, Barcelos said students can connect to other resources, including academic advisors, accessibility services, Indigenous services, recruitment, and campus housing.

Programs available to preview include the arts, science and technology, education, and various trades, in both bachelor’s and master’s degree levels.

“The Glow Up! Experience VIU Hairdressing and Esthetics programs, as well as their trades and technology showcase,” Barcelos said. “Here, students will be able to get in and try hands-on experiences for both of those, really figure out, ‘hey, is hairdressing and esthetics, or is power engineering or is carpentry exactly what I want to do?’. They get to get their hands dirty…they get to test that out.

More information on PreVIU Days, including a schedule and how to sign up, can be found here on their website.

Attendance for all sessions is free, but registration is required.
