RDN completes $1.3M purchase of former French Creek School site

COOMBS — The site of the former French Creek School is now in the hands of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

The RDN announced on Thursday, March 5, the successful purchase of the 3.7-hectare site, located at 2350 Alberni Hwy. in Coombs, from the Qualicum School District for $1.3M.

The land contains the former school building, the gym, a field and a playground, currently used as a community park.

The RDN said the purchase was made possible using $376,000 from Electoral Area F Community Parks and Halls reserve fund, $120,000 from the Community Works Fund, and a long-term loan of $824,000 plus interest.

A referendum on the topic in October drew 64.9 per cent support from Electoral Area F voters, and will be maintained for community use.

Electoral Area F director Leanne Salter said she looks forward to “exploring future uses” for the property.

“I am very pleased with the purchase of the French Creek heritage school and parkland, as it will provide local residents with a much-needed community gathering place.”

The RDN said Staff will prepare a report for a future meeting regarding options for public engagement as well as possible future uses for the buildings and land.

The District ceased operation of the school in 2014, with the RDN securing a ten-year lease for use of the field and playground.
