New dressing room under construction at Oceanside Place

PARKSVILLE — Shovels are in the ground on new dressing room facilities for the VIJHL’s Oceanside Generals.

Supported financially in part by the Regional District of Nanaimo, the project at Oceanside Place is part of the requirements teams must undertake as part of the VIJHL’s move from Junior B to Junior A status in June 2023.

Included in the build will be individual player lockers, shower and laundry facilities and team-owned audio/video equipment.

“It has been a long time coming and a lot of hard work has gone into making this happen,” Rick Hannibal, Generals GM, said. “Having our own room is not only a tremendous milestone for our organization, but also a valuable recruiting tool and a wonderful way to showcase all of our hard work.”

The Generals are also contributing to the project, on top of $250,000 in RDN contributions, through fundraised money and in-kind labour.

Located space previously used for equipment storage, the room will have direct access to Howie Meeker Arena for players and team staff.

It will also be owned by the Regional District once completed, but leased to the Generals for their primary use.

When not in use by the Generals, the facility can be made available for other minor sport teams and groups in the community.

“We are pleased to see the construction of this great addition to Oceanside Place Arena underway,” Sean Wood, chair of the RDN’s Oceanside Services Committee, said. “We look forward to the completion of the dressing room and seeing it put to good use by the Oceanside Generals and other groups in our community.”

Funding from the RDN came through their Oceanside Place Reserve Fund.

Construction is due to be completed by this spring.
