PARKSVILLE  — An informal, unmaintained Parksville trail in an environmentally sensitive area will be enhanced.

The City of Parksville announced phase one of the Parksville Pathway project will begin this month, involving a 1.1 kilomere nature path.

“The objective of phase 1 is to connect the Parksville Community Park at Corfield Street North to the north end of Shelly Road and The Nature Trust of BC trailhead property, traversing along forest, estuary and urban areas,” A City of Parksville news release stated.

The City anticipates the phase one construction project will be done in October.

Last month, Parksville City Council approved a $1 million dollar construction tender for the trail, which follows an existing sewer line, between Nebus Lane and Shelly Rd.

Establishing a non-asphalt, permeable path is in partnership with The Nature Trust of BC, which owns 13-acres of land off Shelly Rd. to be conserved in perpetuity.

Additional information on the project is available here.

Phase 2 of extending the Parksville Pathway is planned, however, it’s unclear where the future planned portion of trail will be located.

City of Parksville communications manager Deb Tardiff told NanaimoNewsNOW a consultant will provide options for the phase 2 trail route, however noted funds for construction have not yet been allocated.
