Nanaimo Mountie pleads guilty to breach of trust following off-duty sexual encounter
NANAIMO — A local Mountie has pleaded guilty to breach of trust after engaging in sexual activity with a vulnerable woman.
Cst. Mark Tyler Hilland, 47, of the Nanaimo RCMP will be sentenced at a later date after entering the plea in B.C. provincial court in Nanaimo on Thursday, Aug. 13, following an incident in July 2024.
In an agreed statement of facts, Crown prosecutor Andrew McLean stated Hilland, a 15-year RCMP veteran, had developed a platonic relationship with a 50-year-old woman, engaging in a number of “friendly, non-sexual conversations,” after seeing her multiple times over the course of a year while on duty.
Agreed Statement of Facts: On the evening of July 2, 2024, Hilland, on duty and in full uniform, was parked in a marked RCMP vehicle at the parking lot of Nanaimo’s John Barsby Secondary School.
