‘We do believe alcohol was a factor:’ head-on collision impacts Hwy. 19A

DASHWOOD — A serious collision has sent multiple people to hospital and continues to impact traffic along Hwy. 19A, north of Qualicum Beach.

Emergency crews were called just before 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 to Hwy. 19A near Ferndowne Rd., when two vehicles collided head-on.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth told NanaimoNewsNOW police attended, along with Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department crews and paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services.

“At this point, there are no life-threatening injuries to anybody, however, some people were transported to hospital.”

Details such as the number of people involved, how many were taken to the hospital, and the make and model of the vehicles involved have not been confirmed at this time.

Traffic was initially closed in both directions at the scene of the crash, with detours put in place.

A longer closure is expected for southbound vehicles on Friday morning, with an RCMP collision analyst attending the scene.

Worth said they’re continuing to look into contributing factors of the rash.

“We do believe alcohol was a factor on the part of one of the drivers, but the preliminary investigation is still ongoing.”

Worth said anyone who witnessed the crash and has yet to speak to an officer is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP detachment at 250 248 6111.
