NANAIMO — A local cannabis production and processing facility in Duke Point wants to be able to sell its product on-site.

Broken Coast Cannabis recently had a rezoning application before Nanaimo City Council to open a retail store along the Duke Point industrial strip at 1100 Maughan Rd.

Broken Coast director of operations Blake Ector told the Monday, Jan. 19 council meeting there are only three such blended production and sales operations in B.C., commonly known as “farmgate” licenses.

He said this would be the second such production/retail cannabis business on Vancouver Island, with the other located in Victoria.

“What we really want to do at our site, and we currently are doing, is bringing tours to site. A lot of budtenders, and retailers around. We want to show off our operation, what we do. We’re very proud of what we do, and we want to be able to open that up more even to the public.”

The rezoning application passed the first two readings without objection and has moved to the public hearing stage, with licence approval required from BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch prior to third and final reading.

Currently, Broken Coast products are available for purchase at local dispensaries and online.

Ector said while they don’t expect many walk-in customers due to their location, they think locals will make the drive to check out their operation, along with picking up some sales from Duke Point ferry traffic.

“We know that tourism in Nanaimo is something that we’re all targeting to expand on for our local economy, and that’s something we want to lean in to. Is there an option where we can provide transportation from downtown Nanaimo out to our site for a tour for folks coming on tour boats or wherever?”
