Dying Giant Sequoia in Parksville to be removed

PARKSVILLE — A huge tree in the city’s downtown is poised to come down in the next few weeks.

The Giant Sequoia along the Island Hwy. W, at Morison Ave. will be removed by early November after a multi-year review of its condition.

“A recent arborist report…confirmed the health of the tree has continued to decline,” the City of Parksville said in a statement. “The recommendation from the arborist is removal of the tree for safety and the protection of surrounding infrastructure.”

The tree was planted in 1999, however had declined noticeably over the last five years.

The report determined between 30 and 40 per cent of its canopy was affected by a fungal blight which has resisted anti-fungal treatment.

It’s health issues are being compounded by issues to the surrounding area.

“The tree is growing in a small garden bed shared with a large oak tree and its roots have caused significant bulging and upheaval of adjacent sidewalk panels,” the City said.

No specific timeline for removal of the tree has been offered, with the City simply stating it would take place “within the next month”.
