Council delays shelter decision
Neighbours around the Bread of Life shelter facility on 3rd Avenue forced city council to reconsider the renewal of a temporary use permit.
While council cited a signed ‘good neighbour agreement’, neighbouring residents and businesses say they’ve never seen it.
Mayor Sharie Minions said while there is no ‘perfect place’ to put a cold-weather shelter in the city, it is providing a critical service.
“People in our community need to be fed, they need to be safe, and they need to be warm when it’s -4,” she said. “There isn’t a perfect place. If we move it out of this neighbourhood and move it to another we will hear from that neighborhood. These are not easy decisions, but ultimately I believe the Salvation Army and the Bread of Life are doing an excellent job taking care of the people in our community who need that care the most.”
