Four arrested, two remain in custody after ‘unprovoked’ stabbing in north Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Four people were arrested after an apparently random stabbing in the city’s north end.

RCMP officers were called to an apartment building in the 6400 block of Portsmouth Rd. just after midnight on Sunday, Aug. 31, after reports of a stabbing.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW a 21-year-old man was attacked in a stabbing police consider “unprovoked”, saying there’s “no connection between the victim and suspects”.

“The victim was walking to his car in the parking lot of his apartment building when he was approached by these unknown people, an altercation ensued which he was stabbed.”

The man’s wallet and vehicle were taken by the quartet, which included three youth and an adult, while the victim was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

He’s since been released from the hospital.

Investigators were able to obtain a description of the vehicle and the suspects, with RCMP members locating the vehicle with all four inside during a traffic stop around an hour later.

Two of the youths were released under a promise to appear at a future court date, while a 16-year-old youth and a 26-year-old man remain in police custody ahead of court appearances this week.

While the names of the youth are protected, police have not released the name of the adult arrested.

O’Brien said police have “had (prior) contact with some of the people” involved in the incident.

Mounties are also looking to speak with a separate person who located the victim’s wallet on Sunday and returned it.

They’re asking the individual, as well as anyone with further information on the incident, to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, quoting file number 2025-27866.

O’Brien added the quick resolution to this incident was the result of great work by responding officers.

“They’re there within minutes, they gather the information, it was disseminated to the members on the road and within an hour, we had four people in custody for a violent, unprovoked attack.”
