QUALICUM BEACH — A rare opportunity to become the voice of a community has opened up in Oceanside.

The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking a volunteer to take on the role of Town Crier to represent the Town at various events, participate in ceremonies, and of course, make public announcements.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to take part in a “Cry Off” competition on Oct. 1 at a special council meeting, where they’ll be tasked with creating a general “town cry” specific to the community.

Qualifications include being at least 18 years old, having a strong and captivating speaking voice, be an engaged and enthusiastic community member, being able to attend various events, and having reliable transportation.

The position became open earlier this year following the retirement of Len Mustard, who held the role for 26 years.

Mustard, along with his wife Marie, who would often accompany him at events, made their final appearance as Town Crier at the May 25 Family Day parade.

In appreciation for their years of service, the Town sponsored two seats at the Village Theatre for the couple, ensuring they’ll “always have a special place in the Town’s cultural community,” said the Town in a June 18 news release.

Those interested can submit an Expression of Interest to qbtown@qualicumbeach.com by Sep. 19, at 4:00 p.m.

They can also be submitted by mail or in person to the Town of Qualicum Beach, 201-660 Primrose St., PO Box 130, Qualicum Beach, BC, V9K 1S7.

More information can be found here on the Town’s website.
