Fireworks to headline annual Ladysmith Days celebration

LADYSMITH — Two days of live music, activites and entertainment will be punctuated by a fireworks show this weekend.

The annual Ladysmith Days runs Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3 at Transfer Beach, with a handful of events also scheduled for the Town’s downtown area along 1st Ave.

Vendor coordinator Mary Furneaux told NanaimoNewsNOW the event has a history spanning more than 40 years and has gone under a few different names over the years including Beach Ball Days and Dogwood Days.

“The whole goal is to celebrate Ladysmith and the surrounding communities. It’s our goal to provide as many free events and activities over the weekend, because there’s a lot of people that just can’t get to other events…so we want to put on something for everybody.”

A bullhead fishing derby kicks things off at Oyster Bay Marina early Saturday morning, but a lion’s share of the events take place at Transfer Beach Park.

Those include a pancake breakfast, market, a greasy pole competition and the popular zucchini races.

Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling will end day one of the festival with a special show beginning around 5:15 p.m.

Sunday’s activities include a soap box derby and skateboard demonstration down 1st Ave. beginning at 10 a.m., followed by more activities and live music at Transfer Beach starting around 11 a.m.

The headline act, Sunset Strip, will take the stage at 8 p.m. leading into a large fireworks show around 10 p.m.

Furneaux said they’ve taken great precautions ahead of the show to ensure all local laws and permit requirements are followed, with the fireworks to be launched from a barge in the harbour.

A huge crowd is expected in the community for the show.

“Because the fireworks are so popular, parking is limited. We try to provide as much as possible, but we ask for people to try and carpool as much as possible, to be patient, and just pay attention to all our traffic control people and the volunteers that are trying to make this as fun event as possible.”

A full schedule of events is available on the Ladysmith Days website.
