Larger green waste bins now available for RDN curbside collection

NANAIMO — Bigger bins are coming to those in the region dealing with larger amounts of yard waste.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is now taking orders for larger, 240-litre curbside collection bins to handle light yard waste and other organics.

Users wanting to upgrade their current 100-litre green organic bin can do so with the larger capacity, or those needing more room can add a 240-litre bin in addition to their current allotment.

Orders must be made by Nov. 30 to qualify for current incentives, and can be done through the RDN’s website, or by calling 250 390 5680 during business hours.

Changes can also be made after the end of November.

Rates and collection fees will be adjusted depending on the level of service selected.

Residents happy with their current capacity do not have to take any action.

The additional capacity stems from community engagement in 2023 which suggested a majority of RDN residents were in need of bigger green waste options.

Roughly two-thirds of survey respondents said they’d like the option to deal with grass clippings, small branches and household food scraps.

The Regional District of Nanaimo handles curbside collection for single-family dwellings in all electoral areas, Snaw-Naw-As First Nation, as well as the municipalities of Lantzville, Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

City of Nanaimo residents are not eligible for increased bin size through this particular program, as the City handles its own curbside collection.
