Family friendly events planned in Nanaimo for National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

NANAIMO — Several events are happening in recognition of harms inflicted upon Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

The fourth annual National Day for Truth & Reconciliation event recognized this year on Monday, Sept. 30 is a federal holiday, which aims to honour victims and survivors of residential schools.

A trio of recreational venues offering family-oriented events are being staged by the City of Nanaimo on Monday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Snuneymuxw First Nation is hosting a community lunch for band members on Monday between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Snuneymuxw’s Recreation and Wellness Centre at the base of Totem Rd.

Commonly referred to as Orange Shirt Day, Sept. 30 reinforces the message of “Every Child Matters”, which has been widely adopted by the local education system.

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools students recognized Orange Shirt Day on Friday, Sept 27, as did Vancouver Island University (VIU) and multiple other workplaces and non-profit service providers throughout the mid Island region.
