Miami Marlins draft former Nanaimo NightOwls catcher

NANAIMO — A huge senior year by a Duncan, B.C. product caught the attention of the Miami Marlins.

Connor Caskenette, a 22-year-old catcher, was snared in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Florida based National League club on Tuesday, July 16.

Caskenette exploded offensively this past season for the West Lafayette, Indiana based Perdue University Boilermakers of the NCAA, where he hit .309, while piling up 69 RBI’s in 55 games.

Thirteen of his 58 hits were home runs.

In addition to strong offensive numbers, Caskenette was named the team’s defensive player of the year and was a Buster Posey Award semifinalist.

Caskenette spent the inaugural 2022 NightOwls season behind the plate,

He also graduated as a standout player for the Mid Island Pirates program.

Caskenette is the second NightOwl to get drafted in the West Coast League team’s three year history, with shortstop Elijah Ickes selected in the 19th round last summer by the Texas Rangers.

In late February, former NightOwl outfielder Brandon Hupe of Vancouver, B.C. signed a contract with the Welland Jackfish of the Intercountry Baseball League.
