Man falls down Millstone River embankment, retrieved by firefighters

NANAIMO — While it wasn’t an overly technical rescue, Nanaimo firefighters applied their skills to rescue a man who fell down a steep bank.

It happened on Friday, May 31 at about 10:15 a.m. along the Millstone River off Terminal Ave. south of Mt. Benson St.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue (NFR) assistant chief Troy Libbus said their crews applied a harness on the man and walked him up the embankment.

“We’re well versed in all of these disciplines, we have approximately 24 full-time certified technicians for high-angle rescue, but the whole department is qualified in rope rescue.”

NFR members are trained in high angle, low slope and tower frame rope rescue disciplines, Libbus said.

“If you ever come across an incident and feel someone needs help, call 911 and Nanaimo Fire Rescue will be there.”
